Virgil Vries horrific mistake ensures that Mamelodi Sundowns remain the unbeaten team in the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Amakhosi went into a match without influential captain Itumeleng Khune, not only Chiefs had to deal with crucial absentees but Sundowns were without their big guns on the day as well.
The likes of Sibusiso Vilakazi, Denis Onyango, Themba Zwane as well as Andile Jali and Wayne Arendse were all missing for the Pretoria outfit.
However the amount of cruial absentees did not stop the visitors from making a bright start when Anthony Laffor cut inside the box after combining well with Gaston Sirino to slot it past Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Virgil Vries in goals.
The Glamour boys [Kaizer Chiefs] responded immediately when Willard Katsande reacted sharply to head home a free-kick from an unmarked position on 14 minutes, from there it was game on.
Kaizer Chiefs from there started piling the pressure as the equaliser seemed to have put in a spring in the Amakhosi steps.
However it Sundowns who created a more clear chance when a quick breakaway directed by Lebohang Maboe saw the ball end up with Laffor, whose shot from close range was cleared off the goal-line later on.
Kaizer Chiefs dominated position in the second stanza, created a few threathning moments in Kenedy Mweene’s goal without any scoring success.
It was late in the game when a horrandous mistake from Itumeleng Khune’s assistant Virgil Vries who had a moment to forget. The goalkeeper misjudged a long ball from Sundowns left back Lakay which bounced in front of him and went over to chasing Maboe who pounced home from close range.
